Hamburg presented itself at the world exhibition EXPO in Shanghai in 2010 with the first certified passive house to ever be built in China. This impressive building - called the Hamburg House - was built according to the example of a house in the HafenCity district in Hamburg's harbour. The experience-oriented exhibition was developed by Kontrapunkt.

Hamburg House - Expo in Shanghai

On its five floors, the Hamburg House passed on the Hanseatic town’s experiences in energy-saving construction and was regarded as a reference for the development and realization of sustainable, energy-saving architecture in Shanghai. The exhibition, conceived by Kontrapunkt in cooperation with the Hamburg Design Factory International, took visitors on an unusual tour. Symbolically, a three-dimensional "Tree of the Good Wishes" that "grew" through the whole house directed visitors through the building. On the basis of the Chinese tradition of wish trees, it took the people’s hopes and wishes for a liveable city and answered these in interactive modules using exemplary solutions from Hamburg.

Along the roots, the trunk, and the branch work of the tree visitors make their way through the building and discover Hamburg as a pulsating, open, integrated and economically high-performance metropolis on the water which is on its way to a people-oriented and sustainable future, lead by their visions.

Here they experienced Hamburg in its many different facets. Through the municipal life areas of culture, business, technological and architectural urban development and architecture, as well as outstanding municipal projects such as the HafenCity, the international architectural exhibition, the international horticultural show and a forecast to the year of the "European Green Capital 2011", a holistic picture of Hamburg was drawn.
